I spent years looking at that blanket as a symbol of thrift. I thought that by refusing to “give in” to the cold, I was saving money, being a good citizen of a resource-strapped reality, and exercising a form of muscular patience. I was wrong.

A heater, something that would turn that eleven-degree bedroom into a twenty-two-degree sanctuary, costs less than a week’s worth of decent groceries. Yet, there is a collective reluctance to spend.

That era is over, but the reflex remains. We cling to the shiver because it feels earned, while the warmth feels like a luxury we haven’t quite negotiated with our conscience yet.

When we look at a cold room, we tend to see it as a static state. But as an archaeological illustrator, I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about structures as systems of energy. When I’m drawing a piece of pottery in a cold studio, my hands lose the fine motor control required for stippling and line work.

My “thrift” in not turning on a heater directly results in a drawing that takes longer because I have to stop and blow on my fingers. A room is a heat sieve. The walls are pulling energy out of your body; the floor is a heat sink.

We often avoid heaters because we remember the old coils that smelled like burning dust and made the air feel like a desert. The cold is a solved problem. It is a solved problem that fits in a car boot and plugs into a standard wall socket.

The stairwell remains the coldest place on earth when neighbors treat a shiver as a badge of honor instead of a signal to plug in a heater.
